Common mistakes on inbound insurance calls
Recognize the habits that waste call time, weaken trust, and distract from a consistent best-practices routine.
Lesson 1
Starting with a pitch
A long introduction can answer questions the consumer never asked while leaving the real reason for the call undiscovered. Identify yourself, connect to the consumer's action, and ask what they hoped to accomplish. Listen before selecting the explanation that belongs next.
The opposite mistake is rushing past identity or purpose because the call is billable. A fast call that depends on ambiguity is not efficient. Establishing context early protects both time and trust.
- Avoid assuming the requested product from the campaign name alone.
- Do not talk over uncertainty; clarify it.
- Never imply government affiliation or an unsupported outcome.
Lesson 2
Qualifying in the wrong order
Collecting detailed information before basic product, location, or timing fit wastes effort and can feel intrusive. Use approved gating questions first and explain why each is relevant. When the conversation is not a fit, close it cleanly rather than looking for a way around the requirement.
Another time leak is trying to solve matters outside the service you can provide. Stay within that service, explain the boundary clearly, and offer only an approved next resource. Then prepare to give the next caller your full attention.
Lesson 3
Taking more calls than you can answer
Set hours, daily limits, and maximum calls at once around your actual staffing. If you are working alone, plan for one conversation at a time. Plan breaks into your availability and confirm delivery changes before relying on them. Being prepared to answer is the first part of working a call well.
Review the training regularly and practice the same call flow until it becomes familiar. QLG's best practices are built from hundreds of hours of calls with these same types of consumers. Put that experience to work through prompt pickup, attentive qualification, and a clear next step on every conversation.
